For this new exhibition, from 12 February to 10 March, Lili Wood, whose paintings with their luminous power and magnetic colours need no introduction, presents two complementary series: one depicts vast landscapes where people swim in open water in invigorating “winter baths”; while the other, as a counterpoint, presents small-format interior scenes with a calm, intimate atmosphere and a comforting gentleness.
Just as a cat watches the shadows of birds dancing on the wall of a room, we contemplate the beauty of the sea through the window of a cosy home, with the desire to set sail in our minds. We willingly let our minds drift, sometimes over the infinity of the waves, sometimes over a ray of light piercing through a curtain. We are both inside and outside, feeling the crisp cold of the winter air, but also the warm pleasure of coming home to snuggle up.
In these drawings with their refined composition and combination of cool colours, we find the tranquillity and serenity of nature at rest in winter, but also the lively, twirling touch of the illustrator, who has the art of painting the wind and the imperceptible movements of the atmosphere, like the shared breath of the air, the sea and the earth, like a deep breath, a breath of invigorating winter air on the coast.
In Lili Wood's paintings, winter is not grey, it is silver; and as the hours pass, it is adorned with delicate shades of blue, pink, mauve and pearly reflections...
