On a beach, two figures on horseback. The sky is pink, and the water is a deep mauve. Calm and silence reign: in Marie Larrivé’s illustrations, it is the colors that interact with the shadows. In these luminous landscapes, where the sea can be violet or glowing red beneath skies in fluorescent shades of pink, orange, and sometimes green, human figures and animals often appear only in backlight, half-hidden in a chiaroscuro of inscrutable charm. The bold use of color, which flirts with the unreal, straddling the line between artificiality and softness, is the very soul and captivating mystery of these compositions. Moments suspended in spaces of strange beauty, where the mystery of a silhouette contrasts with the spectacle of light, Marie Larrivé’s paintings exist on the edge of dreams and visions, and we gladly lose ourselves in contemplation of them.
