Bathed in the warm, enveloping golden light of an accent lamp, a candle or a log fire, Clémence Monnet’s interiors – richly adorned and inhabited by figures with elegant silhouettes – offer a warm and intimate atmosphere. But these exquisite rooms, with walls adorned in deep reds and blues, also become the setting for mysterious scenes where secrecy mingles with gentleness. A suitcase resting in a corner, a bouquet of flowers, a curtain fluttering in the breeze, fruits spilling from their basket… Every detail seems steeped in mystery, and the objects appear as clues to a story which, behind a curtain, in the corner of an archway or in a doorway, remains only half-revealed.
The richness of Clémence Monnet’s compositions stems as much from the refinement of the settings as from the illustrator’s flair for storytelling: mystery and intimacy coexist in a style which, through the prominence given to ornamentation and attention to decorative detail, is reminiscent of the paintings by Félix Vallotton painted in the early 20th century., through the prominence given to ornamentation and attention to decorative detail, is reminiscent of the paintings by Félix Vallotton painted in the early 20th century.
